Zwinger vom Polarstern emphasizes the total German Shepherd Dog, and we prove our dogs both in the home and on the Schutzhund field. All of our dogs are raised and trained from puppies, and we're actively out there training and competing. We try our best to honestly evaluate temperament. We don't just say our dogs work: we prove it.

Well, at least we try. We face the usual hardships: enormous travel distances; injuries; weather. You know what they say about the seasons in Montana: "Nine months of winter and three months of training!"

Our goal is to breed a few litters now and again, once we find that outstanding dog with attributes that deserve to be passed on. There is no such thing as a perfect dog, but it sure would be nice to get closer! We've had our share of bad luck: if the working temperament is there, then the body fails, and vice versa. And since we find it difficult to place dogs who don't work out, right now we're at our limit of retired and geriatric dogs. So it may take us a little longer to make a name for ourselves, but in the meantime we'll keep working and learning and trying and, most importantly, enjoying our dogs.
